Building Localized Economies

In May 2015, Ecology North hosted the first Building Localized Economies Gathering at the tree of Peace In Yellowknife. Keynote speakers Dave Thompson and Diana Gibson were joined by over thirty presenters from around the NWT who spoke about their work in fields such as green energy, local food production, and environmental stewardship, all helping to transition the NWT economy away from extractive industries and imported goods.

The presentations were streamed live to a dedicated website, localizedeconomies.ca, where visitors could submit comments and questions and also debate and vote on motions put forward by presenters in a dedicated discussion forum. This was the first time such an approach had been tried at a conference in the NWT.

The online forum for idea sharing and discussion was such a success that Ecology North has created an Ideas Bank where people all across the NWT can post ideas join the discussion on building sustainable communities in the North.
