Interested in environmental issues and green events?  Ecology North is looking for a dynamic and enthusiastic On-The-Land Recreation assistant to help plan, facilitate and organize Ecology North’s environmental education programming and events such as the School Garden Program, Environmental Adventure Camps, Folk on the Rocks’ Environment Team, as well as a variety of other diverse project work in collaboration with other Ecology North staff.  The position is 37.5 hours a week for 14 weeks with a start date in May and an end date at the beginning of September. Due to funding for the position, only youth 30 or younger will be considered.

Key job responsibilities:

  • Support hands-on activities associated with our school garden program;
  • Facilitate workshops with children and youth;
  • Provide leadership and programming to children and youth during Environmental Adventure Camps; 
  • Support staff with event planning throughout the summer;
  • Coordinate and organize Ecology North’s participation at Folk on the Rocks: the Environment Team and  dishwashing station; 
  • Assist with education and outreach in our core program areas of water stewardship, waste reduction, climate change, local food production, and nature appreciation;
  • Contribute to the overall operations of the Ecology North office. 

The ideal candidate will have the following skills and knowledge: 

  • Ability to work effectively in teams and independently;
  • Ability to work in a cross-cultural environment;
  • Must have a keen knowledge and enthusiasm about the environment;
  • Attention to detail: the candidate should be able to produce accurate work with minimal supervision;
  • Experience with effective time management personally and/or professionally;
  • Excellent computer literacy skills including word processing, spreadsheets and presentations; 
  • Interest and experience in working with youth;
  • Interest and experience coordinating events;
  • Interest and experience coordinating large numbers of volunteers;
  • Interest and experience working outdoors and gardening; and
  • Knowledge of the north and northern cultures.
